All the prices noted are the prices at the time of writing.
Every sexplorer sooner or later contemplates the concept of establishing a dedicated space for intimacy, commonly known as a sex room.
When embarking on this endeavor, two fundamental questions naturally arise the ideal location and the associated cost.
The process of converting whole rooms into dedicated sex rooms is too broad to include in this newsletter, however, you can watch Netflix show How to Build a sex room to see how it is done (more on that below).
Why too broad?
As you'll read below, the looks and the feel, and the equipment you would aim for in your sex room largely depend on you, who you are and what are your likes and dislikes.
Simply slamming all possible sex gear into one room would not make the room great for everybody/you.
On top of that, the amount and pricing of contract work needed to create a dedicated sex room is something that will be different for everybody.
We are suckers for a good DIY project which means we would always consider doing work ourselves - you might do the same and that's why this is impossible to break down into specific costs.
This edition also does not include the price of the ''regular'' furniture (shelves, dressers, tables, chests, etc etc etc) because that largely depends on your budget and also skills.
You might also consider getting stuff off the Facebook marketplace or Craiglist first, as it is cheaper, and you can easily take the paint off, sand it, repaint it etc etc etc.
However, if your budget allows it or you simply do not have time, it might be easier to buy the furniture.
That's why we are going to demystify the process of creating a sex room we can all have.
Sex room we can all have
In the following text, we will delve into the possibilities of transforming our very own bedrooms into fully functional sex rooms - a process we have undergone ourselves recently.
We'll explore how a seemingly ordinary bedroom can be effortlessly converted into an exciting and alluring space dedicated to pleasure and intimacy.
This is the cost-efficient way to go as you won't be going through any serious contract work and renovations and it is most likely you already have furniture in the bedroom.
Now onto the first crucial questions:
Who are you?
Who is going to use the sex room?
What do you like and what do you dislike?
What are your preferences when it comes to decorations and what are your preferences when it comes to pleasure?
When considering a sex room, it's crucial to reflect on how you envision its use. Consider your personal preferences, desired sensations, and desired decor and ambiance.
So in order to help ourselves (and hopefully you), we came up with the list of decor options as well as a sex gear and equipment we are going to consider for this project.
Sex room decor & equipment list
Here are the things we considered:
Remember, the list should be tailored based on your needs and wants, based on your preferences - which means the first step to transforming your existing room or building a dedicated sex room is a loooooong conversation, together with a piece of paper and a pen.
Sex gear & furniture:
Smaller stuff/gear: a set of restraints, collar, and a leash, mouth gags, knee pads, a sex machine, sex sheets, noise-canceling headphones, spanking paddles, floggers, love strap (or belt), blindfold, a tickler, Wartenberg pinwheels.
Bigger stuff/furniture: sex bench or spanking bench, a cage, queening chair, stockade, X frame (Saint Andrew's cross), a sex swing, stripper pole.
Smaller stuff/gear
And here is how we tackled this part:
For us, it is important that we have a set of good quality restraints, that are both sexy, as it elevates the whole experience and that are durable so they can withstand any play and also withstand the time.
And for that, the solution was easy:  Sportsheets has a Saffron line of restraints that looks extremely sexy and are very well made.
We opted for the blindfold, handcuffs, leash and collar, hogtie set and spreader bar set.
Also the breathable ball gag, flogger, tickler, Wartenberg pinwheel and a paddle.
Basically everything 😂
I just want to give a special shoutout to the  Saffron blindfold as it is built differently - notice the padded area around the eyes. That provides a complete blackout experience.
That all amounted to approx $380.
A bit hefty price but these restraints will probably last forever because I do not see them breaking apart.
One thing we own from before is the  under-the-bed-restraint system (click for in-use pics) and it is really cool piece of gear since it easily transforms your bed into something much more.
We did not want the sex machine as well as knee pads (we use the pillows if they're needed), however, if you are going to be doing a lot of kneeling, crawling etc definitely consider getting knee pads (expect to spend between $15 and $30).
Sex machines on the other hand cost much more and are a piece of equipment. The quality brands in this department are the Cowgirl and Hismith sex machines.
Cowgirl costs around $1700 while the Hismith basic machine cost anywhere from $100 to $200, while the premium machines cost anywhere from $400 to $800.
Noise-canceling headphones we already had ( these ones ) and they're a superb play tool (paired with a blindfold) during sensation play sessions where we eliminate other person senses in order for the touch to be more pronounced and for them to focus on it.
We also did not get a dedicated  love strap as belts are more than great (you can use it as a kinky tool during a blowjob or as a handle during doggystyle).
Sex sheets are also important as they reduce the cleanup and the damage to your own sheets and bedding. We own a simple  sex sheet  however, you can invest  in really great & expensive ones.Â
Sex room must haves
Aside from the toys and gear, we also equppied our sex room box or bag or drawer with some must-haves.
Here's what we got:
Candles for ambiance
Lubricant ( Woomore &  Good Clean Love )
Wipes
Gloves
That all amounted to approx. $115 (Spent so far: $448)
Bigger stuff/furniture
We already have a bed in the room, which means we already have the ''main'' playspace.
Out of the bigger stuff, we got the Liberator Cello Chaise and it used most of our free space in the bedroom so we really could not get any of the extra sex furniture, even if we wanted to.
The thing we got is the Liberator Couch (we always wanted to get one) and it is WONDERFUL.
It allows for some really sexy positions and intimate moments.
And yes, it does take some space however it is the space well used.
If our bedroom was bigger, we would probably consider getting another couch that has a wider sitting/laying area just to add more variety to the space.
The alternative to a couch is this  inflatable sex furniture that can easily be deflated and put away.
I also want to note that companies like  Wayfair offer this type of sex couches for a bit less of money .
Other furniture
Instead of the X cross ( St. Andrew's Cross) we got the  door jam handcuffs , which you can pair with the spreader bar to get the makeshift X frame. It is much, much cheaper and space-effective option.
And also, instead of the classic, we opted for the  over-the-door sex swing which is great to use and can be mounted in a matter of minutes ( see here ).
We did not opt for any of the other furniture mentioned, because of the space but also because we don't need it or would use it to the extent that it would justify a possibly steep price.
The cost?
Liberator Cello Chaise, door jam cuffs and over-the-door sex swing cost us $607 (Spent so far: $1055).
However, scroll down to see how much you can expect to spend if you decide to get any of the listed furniture items.
Stockroom is the first place where we look for furniture as their stuff is also really well made (and looks great), however,  Etsy and  Extreme Restraints can also be good sources. Extreme restraints has cheaper options than Stockroom. There is also a dedicated category at The Sex Shed: sex toys for sex rooms.
Sex bench
Liberator offers a simpler version, which can go unnoticed but can also provide a play area as well as spanking area.
Equus Wave ($480) is cool because it is both a sex couch and a sex bench, while  Prelude Sex Bench ($815-$894) is more a hide in a plain sight option. Prelude Sex Bench also has discreet/hidden restraint clips.
Spanking bench
Spanking benches are common and are available in several price ranges, however, most of the costs upwards of $400. We found the '' Obedience Extreme Sex Bench with Restraint Straps '' ($499), a slightly better '' The Fuck Bench '' ($740) and the exquisite '' Padded Spanking Bench '' ($2500).
Personally, The Fuck Bench is our favorite here as the positioning looks the best to us.
A cage
Good cages cost more than a $1000 and we found the following options:
Jail Cell Stand Up Cage - $1200
 Coffee table cage - $2500
 Steel Puppy Cage - $1190
Have in mind that cages take a lot of space and are hard to hide.
Queening chair
There are several options for the chair but the one we liked the most is the  The Queening Chair ($400).
We never used/played with a Queening Chair but we might get in the future. It looks sexy as hell.
Stockades
Stockades is can easily be removed and put away, however, you will need the space to put them away/hide them.
The ones we really like is the  Stockroom Stockade ($400) and the  Subversion Deluxe Stockade . ($900) The second one comes with a sex machine.
There is also a  back stockade option ($350) and the  neck stockade ($150) for which you'll need a ceiling hook.
A more lightweight option would be the  Steel Suspension Bar ($100) for which you also need a ceiling hook.
X frame (Saint Andrew's cross)
If you choose to get this sexy beast (instead of the make-shift version we mentioned above), prepare to spend anywhere from $400 to $3000.
A simpler version, like this  Masters cross will cost you around $550, while the  top-notch cross from Stockroom might set you back for $2400.
Etsy has some interesting options, like this cross from an indie maker.
Hanging-from-the-ceiling (or from a stand) sex swing
The options to check out are the  leather swing ($355) and the  leather swing, web style ($498).
Those options require ceiling installation, which will add a tiny bit more to the cost.
You should be confident in the installation quality as faulty installation might result in an injury to you, your partner and the property.
The other way to go is to get a stand and a sex swing.
This would not require a ceiling installation, just the assembly of the stand. This is a slightly simpler option, however, it does require more space.
The one we were looking one is  Trinity Sex Swing Stand ($532).
The one with the stand requires more space but you can completely remove it after the play. The one hanging from the ceiling is easily removed however the hook stays and might arise some questions from curious guests.
In our  Substack chat room , a reader recently posed a question about concealing hooks. You can hang a plant or hang a wind chime, however, if your hook is in the middle of the room, all that might look...weird. The other way to go, if you feel crafty enough, is to  hide it under a smoke detector.Â
Stripper pole
Stripper poles come in two versions, one that is permanent and installed and the other one that is telescopic and can be mounted and taken down easily.
The installed one is better, more sturdy option which you should choose if you're planning to do more serious dancing or acrobatic moves on it. If you're going do the pole for simple dancing, teasing and ass shaking, the other option will be enough.
You can expect to spend between $100 and $400 on it, depending on the make and model.
Bondage bed
And we left the biggest thing for the end! Bondage bed is probably a big wish for many kinksters as it gives you unlimited options of tying up your partner and it looks sexy AF.
The one  bondage bed Stockroom is selling costs $3395 and it looks hellishly great.
The other option we found is a company in UK, called X Rated Beds and everything is made-to-order. The prices are not listed but if we had to guess, the products are probably pricey, however the quality looks awesome.  Check out what they offer and also check out the  list of past projects .
However, you can always opt for the under-the-bed restraint system which costs less than $80.
Here are some things you might want to consider:
Other stuff worth checking out
 Suspension bondage frame ($648)
 Latex Vac Bed ($495)
Cock and ball CBT pillory ($250)
 Bondage and milking table ($579)
 The Punishing Bench ($675)
 Sex stool ($1530)
Note that if you spend enough time researching you can definitely find somewhat cheaper options but have in mind that quality/durability might be questionable and you can also find a custom made options that can cost 5x the price mentioned.
Sex rooms lightning options
Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood and ambiance within a sex room.
The right lighting can create an atmosphere of sensuality, intimacy, and comfort.
Soft, warm lighting can help to create a relaxing and inviting environment, while dimmed or colored lights can add a touch of romance and intrigue.
Additionally, adjustable lighting options allow for customization, enabling individuals to set the perfect lighting levels to suit their preferences and desires.
Properly designed lighting can enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of the space, highlight key features, and contribute to a heightened sensory experience.
All in all, lighting is a vital element in creating a captivating and pleasurable atmosphere within a sex room.
Our choice:
For our lighting setup, we opted for  two Samsung Hue light bulbs that offer a wide range of color options, allowing us to create the desired ambiance by selecting virtually any color.
Additionally, we installed an  LED strip light across the room, which provides further flexibility in color and intensity control. With a convenient remote control, we can effortlessly adjust the lighting to suit our moods and preferences.
To ensure privacy and create a more intimate setting, we also  incorporated blackout curtains , not only shielding us from prying eyes but also providing a darker, more secluded atmosphere for our intimate moments.
Price:
HUE system + 2 light bulbs = $170
LED strip = $18
Blackout curtains = $43
Total = $231 (Spent so far: $1286)
Sex room soundproofing and music:
When it comes to sounds and music, there are 2 things to consider: soundproofing the room and installing music (system).
Should you soundproof the room depends on your living situation and the budget.
We have neighbors below, however we do not have any wishes to soundproof our room as we are currently renting and that requires more of an investment, time and money-wise, so we try and keep noise to a respectful minimum.
However, if you are interested in exploring soundproofing options, we have gathered some valuable resources that can provide guidance and information on the topic:
Cheapest way to soundproof a roomÂ
5 cheap and easy ways to soundproof a room, whether you're a homeowner or a renterÂ
The cost of soundproofing a room can vary depending on several factors such as the size of the room, the level of soundproofing desired, and the materials used.
On average, soundproofing a room can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars.
We, on the other hand, love music so we decided to figure out the music situation. Depending on your budget, there are plenty of options available.
Our living room has a 2.1 system that is connected to the TV and we decided we do not want another one in the bedroom.
We wanted something that is going to enhance our day-to-day life and allows us to listen to the music in other rooms of the apartment.
And after searching and consider the modern, wireless, speakers that can be placed in multiple rooms, we settled for a simple solution.
We got  2 of the JBL portable speakers that can easily be connected to the phone (Spotify) and connected to each other. We can also move them from room to room with no effort or even place one in the kitchen and the other one in the office room and listen to the same music source.
Two speakers when placed in two corners of the room make for a surround system and the quality of sound is really, really good considering they're portable speakers.
Price:
2x JBL portable speakers = $160
Total = $160 (Spent so far: $1446)
Sex room decor & storage
We did not spend too much time or money decorating our bedroom as we want to keep the bedroom look.
The only two things we got is the piece we comissioned for Raw Love Studio and it is  vulva art canvas and a long mirror. from IKEA - because mirrors are sexy.
The mirror was $70, which brings us to $1516 total spent.
We wholeheartedly recommend getting a mirror and if you do, when you do, play a bit with finding the right position.
Nonetheless, here are some thoughts on the decor and storage options.
Walls
We made the decision to keep the existing wall color unchanged due to the temporary nature of our current residence,
However, if the place was ours, we would definitely opt for repainting the walls to fit our desired ambiance.
In addition, we would also incorporate wall tapestries on select walls to create captivating accents and focal points within the room.
These tapestries add a touch of personality and visual interest, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of our intimate space.
Sex room art
Similar to many others, we have a deep appreciation for art and the inclusion of small, unique artistic touches within our space.
These elements have the power to elevate a regular room into something truly extraordinary.
They infuse the room with a sense of individuality and create a distinct ambiance that feels truly special. The presence of art adds depth, character, and a personal touch, making a room a truly remarkable and memorable space.
When decorating a sex room, the goal is to create an atmosphere that reflects your personal taste and enhances the intimate experience.
Here are some ideas for art and decor to consider:
Erotic artwork
Hang tasteful erotic art or sensual photography that celebrates the beauty of the human form and ignites desire.
Abstract paintings
Choose abstract paintings with vibrant colors or suggestive forms to create a visually stimulating environment.
Sensual sculptures
Display sensual sculptures or figurines that evoke intimacy and sensuality.
Wall decals
Use removable wall decals with sexy or romantic motifs like silhouettes, lips, or love quotes to add a touch of playfulness.
Candle holders
Place decorative candle holders or sensual scented candles around the room to create an intimate and romantic ambiance.
Sensory fabrics
Hang fabric tapestries or drapes in rich textures or vibrant colors to add warmth and visual interest to the space.
Statement furniture
Consider unique furniture pieces like a velvet chaise lounge or a luxurious canopy bed to make a bold statement.
Personalized touches
Add personal items or mementos that hold special meaning to you and your partner to create a more intimate and personalized atmosphere.
The key is to create a space that reflects your desires and preferences, allowing you to feel comfortable and fully immersed in the experience.
Mirrors
In our quest to enhance the allure of our sex room, we made the deliberate choice to incorporate a wall mirror.
Mirrors, in our view, epitomize the essence of sex room decor.
Their presence adds a touch of sensuality and enhances the overall ambiance, particularly during intimate play.
The reflective surface of the mirror can intensify the visual experience, heightening the sensations and creating an enticing atmosphere within the room.
With its seductive appeal, the wall mirror becomes an integral element that amplifies the sensual nature of our space.
We got a long mirror from IKEA - the mirror was $70, which brings us to $1516 total spent.
We wholeheartedly recommend getting a mirror and if you do, when you do, play a bit with finding the right position.
Sex room storage
Okay, but where are we going to store all this stuff?
When it comes to storing sex toys and gear in a sex room, organization and discretion are key. Here are some storage options to consider:
Lockable toy box
Invest in a lockable toy box or trunk that provides a secure and discreet storage solution for your sex toys and accessories. Look for options with compartments or dividers to keep items organized.
Storage drawers or cabinets
Use dedicated drawers or cabinets to store your sex toys and gear. Choose furniture pieces with lockable drawers or doors for added privacy and security.
Hanging organizers
Hang fabric or mesh organizers on the back of doors or inside closets to store smaller sex toys, bondage gear, or lubes. These organizers usually have multiple pockets or compartments for easy access and organization.
Decorative boxes or baskets
Place sex toys and gear in decorative boxes or baskets that can be discreetly displayed on shelves or in plain sight. Choose stylish options that blend with your room's decor.
Underbed storage containers
Utilize underbed storage containers to keep larger sex toys or items like restraints or paddles hidden yet easily accessible. Opt for containers with lids or covers to maintain cleanliness and discretion.
Custom-built furniture
Consider custom-built furniture pieces that have hidden compartments or secret storage areas specifically designed for sex toys and gear. Examples include ottomans or benches with storage space beneath the seat.
Hanging pegboards
Install a pegboard on a wall or inside a closet to hang and organize your sex toys and gear. Add hooks or pegs to the board, allowing you to easily arrange and display your collection.
Toy bags or pouches
Keep smaller sex toys or travel-sized items in individual bags or pouches to prevent them from getting tangled or lost. These bags can be stored in a larger container or hung on hooks for easy access.
Whatever option you opt for, remember to keep it clean, dry, and easily accessible to ensure the longevity and hygienic maintenance of your sex toys and gear.
Adding textures to the sex room
Adding textures to a sex room can enhance the sensory experience and create a more immersive environment. Here are some examples of how you can incorporate textures:
Soft fabrics
Use luxurious, tactile fabrics such as velvet, silk, or faux fur for upholstery, cushions, or throws to add a sensual touch.
Furry rugs
Place plush rugs or sheepskin rugs on the floor to create a soft and cozy surface that invites exploration.
Sensory wall coverings
Opt for textured wallpapers or wall panels with 3D designs to add visual interest and a tactile element to the room.
Satin bedding
Dress the bed with silky satin sheets and pillowcases for a smooth and sensual feel against the skin.
Faux leather
Incorporate faux leather elements like furniture or bondage accessories for a kinky and tactile experience.
Sensory play toys
Explore textured toys like feather ticklers, textured massage oils, or textured bondage accessories for added tactile stimulation.
Natural Elements
Introduce natural textures like woodgrain, stone, or seashells for a calming and earthy feel.
Embossed artwork
Hang artwork with raised textures or embossed designs to create a visually and tactilely interesting focal point.
The choice of textures should align with your personal preferences and desired ambiance. Experiment with different textures to find what enhances your sensory experience in the sex room.
How much does a sex room cost?
The price of the sex room we can all have is approximately $1563, however, you have to remember that it is the room equipped with the stuff we want and like. Your room might be more affordable or more expensive.
We've decked out our room with pretty much all the restraints you can think of, and guess what? We can even use them as makeshift furniture!
We've got the top-notch Liberator, some sweet lighting, killer tunes, and a whole bunch of other high-quality stuff that's built to last.
Plus, the best part is that our equipment is super versatile and covers a ton of different scenarios, ensuring we'll have an awesome playtime experience for long, long time.
We hope the insight into our process is going to help you in elevating your space into a sexy play area.
How to build a sex room
We watched a damn great TV show on Netflix, called  How to build a sex room , where couples looking for more spice in the bedroom hire luxury interior designer  Melanie Rose to create stylish spaces where they can carry out any fantasy they wish for.
The show is absolutely genius. It showcases the whole thought process behind creating a sex room tailored to one's need and wishes.
Screenshots of the sex rooms Melanie Rose build:
According to the host, Melanie Rose, budgets range from $35,000 and $40,000 up to $190,000 plus.
And that is a lot of money! We think it is because of the contractor work that was needed to transform the rooms from how they looked into what they became, + a lof of furniture was custom-made specifically for them.
